Hey Hauppauge High School!
My name is Crosby Cadmus and I go to Bretton Woods. I would like to introduce you to my sister, Makenzie. Makenzie has a rare, incurable, genetic disease called EB (Epidermolysis Bullosa). It makes her body unable to produce the collagen and proteins that “glue” skin layers together. Her form of EB affects her organs too, and will gradually get worse . Makenzie’s skin is fragile and she does her “bandages” several hours each day, so she can play. Makenzie also has a “tubie” (g tube), to help her body get the medicines and food it needs, because she burns more calories than me each day!
My mom left her job to care for our family after Makenzie was born and she is expensive; her wound care, nutrition, and other supplies cost over $5000 per month. When she was 2, Makenzie and I did an experimental bone marrow transplant where I gave her my cells; I am happy that she can do more fun things like go to Kindergarten with me at BW next year!
Makenzie is a “fighter”, quick to smile and laugh, and bounces back from tough ouchies and problems. Our hope for Makenzie is that she will live a life of confidence and strength. I want to help my mom and dad teach my sister to love EB, to not regret it, and to face each day and challenge with a smile.
My mom and dad say “no” to me a lot; but when I really want something and ask for it, they find a way to help me. My garden, my greenhouse and the C.C. Crumbery are things they have helped me with because I asked, worked for them, and love doing them.
Please join C. C. Crumbery in our first fundraiser to benefit my sister’s special needs medical trust. All proceeds from “Muffins, Makenzie & Me” will be donated to the Makenzie Cadmus Special Needs Trust to fund her out of pocket medical needs.
